Garbage Disposals

Garbage Disposal Installations & Replacements

A garbage disposal is one of the top must-have conveniences for every great kitchen and they come with many options. These range from the most basic to higher horsepower restaurant-quality units with strong and durable motors, ultra-quiet versions, and even septic-safe versions.

Features of a Great Garbage Disposal:

  • An automatic shut-off (this prolongs the life of your unit by stopping the rotating blades when an item gets lodged, instead of tearing up the motor).
  • Auto-reverse mode (helps loosen jams).
  • Durable motor.
  • Clog-free operation.
  • Quiet.
  • Solid warranty.

Garbage Disposal Issues? We’ve got you covered

Whether you’re installing a new garbage disposal, replacing an existing one, or just need a garbage disposal repair, you can count on the TE Certified team for timely, reliable service every time.

We verify that your new garbage disposal is sewer/septic compatible and properly sized for your household usage and under-sink capacity. And we relocate plumbing to accommodate kitchen renovations and deeper sinks.

Switching to a different type of wiring? No problem. We install hardwired units where there is no existing wiring and install electrical outlets for plug-in units. And we run the electrical for an under-counter or wall-mounted switch.

TE Certified electrical installations are aligned with the National Electrical Code and local municipality safety standards with GFCI protection, insulating conduit sheathing, secure mounting, proper wiring, suitable breaker size, and dedicated circuits where required.

Pro tip! Preserve Your Garbage Disposal

While some repairs are inevitable, it is possible to avoid significant damage just by knowing what you can and can’t toss down your garbage disposal. A few items to keep away from your system include:

  • Animal bones
  • Corn husks or any stringy material
  • Eggshells
  • Fruit pits
  • Grease/oil
  • Pasta
  • Potato peels

Troubleshooting, air switches, and other important features...

Here, we’ll discuss important features, useful modifications like air switches, and troubleshooting tips when your garbage disposal doesn’t run properly.

Should you need the help of a licensed plumber, be sure to give us a call! We’ll be happy to help you with whatever project or repair you have in mind.

Which garbage disposal is best?

When deciding which disposal to get, there are a few important features to consider:

  • The first is noise. You do not want to get a unit that rattles the entire home when running— the quieter, the better!
    • The disposal we installed in Josh’s home, the MainLine Luxor Finale, is about the quietest unit you can get without sacrificing efficiency. It’s a one-horsepower unit with a built-in sound barrier that makes it super quiet when running.
  • The second is the material. Naturally, you want something with a sturdy construction that will last a while without corroding.
  • The third, and last, is horsepower. The units can come in various sizes, including half-horsepower, ¾ horsepower, and one horsepower.

More horsepower increases the unit's strength, but it typically increases the unit's cost and dimensions as well. So, you’ll have to select the right garbage disposal based on your unique needs and budget.

Air switches

An air switch is a button installed next to the kitchen sink, which allows you to control your garbage disposal with a simple touch. This is a popular modification because air switches have a modern appearance and make life much easier, especially for people with a garbage disposal on their kitchen island!

With an air switch, you don’t need to open your cabinets, reach inside, and turn the device on that way, or reach across the counter with wet hands to flip a switch.

Are you ready to upgrade to an air switch? Reach out to TE Certified Plumbers today to install this useful feature in your kitchen!

When your disposal will not work...

Garbage disposal won’t turn on

Uh-oh! Your unit isn’t turning on. Here’s what you may want to try before calling a TE Certified Plumber.

  • First, open the cabinet that houses the unit.
  • Second, make sure your GFCI outlet(s) that power your unit are not tripped.
  • Third, check the reset button located at the bottom (or side of your unit). If your unit is stuck, the built-in thermal protection overload can trip, so a simple reset of the device may resolve the problem.

If your disposal unit still doesn’t turn on, reach out to us. One of our licensed and experienced plumbers will inspect your garbage disposal and provide you with the best solution.

Garbage disposal is humming

When you turn your unit on and it just hums, don’t worry. That’s a common problem, and there are a few things you can try to get everything working again. Just remember, never put your hand inside a garbage disposal under any circumstances.

  1. Using a garbage disposal wrench or a simple allen key, you can easily free up whatever may be stuck in your unit. Take your tool, insert it under the disposal, and turn it left to right to free up anything that might be caught in the unit. This should allow the blades within the unit to spin freely.
  2. If those tools are not available to you, do not worry! Unplug the unit from the outlet, grab a wooden spoon or dowel, put it inside the disposal from the sink’s entrance, and then begin slowly moving it around to free up the blades.

We’re here to help with your garbage disposal needs.

If you’re still experiencing difficulty with your unit, want to install a new one, or equip your unit with an air switch, contact TE Certified Plumbers! We’ll be more than happy to help.
